I hope this letter finds all of you well. I would like to touch base with all of you about the work our Centre has been engaged with since we opened in May. We held our First Annual General Meeting and membership drive last week. It was an enjoyable evening in spite of the heat and humidity, and everyone appreciated the opportunity to meet other community members and become more involved in the work that we have begun together.

One milestone of the evening was the inauguration of our board of directors, comprised of a dozen or so officers who offer various professional backgrounds and a cross section of gender, age, sexual orientation, religious and secular affiliation. Members of the board convened after the formal inauguration. Reflecting upon this meeting, I feel confident that a fine group has been assembled to to help administrate Centre functions and steer the growth and development of this new organization.

Less than three months ago, we officially opened the youth centre and I began facilitating drop-in hours. From 3:00 to 7:30 every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, West Island youth who are questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identification (or who already identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender) are welcomed through our doors. The teens that I have already gotten to know are a friendly, confident and enthusiastic bunch, and I feel privileged to offer them guidance as they develop authentic identities as young adults. The support and encouragement from all of you who have volunteered your life experience and professional skills towards this unique and valuable project not only makes the Centre’s work possible, but strengthens it in the process.

The Centre will be participating in the Montreal Pride festivities on August 13-14. We will be at the community day on Saturday, and marching in the parade on Sunday. We are looking for people who would like to join us in the parade! Our group will be comprised mostly of teenagers & young adults, but I invite all of you to tell me whether you’re interested in participating. In the meantime, invite any young people you know who are LGBT or straight allies to get in touch about marching with us.

Le voilà, après avoir été tant annoncé depuis des mois sur GGTV ou dans Le Point, l’événement classique Castell-Jacomin est disponible pour visionnement sur GGTV au www.gayglobe.us.

Il s’agit d’une entrevue entre le pianiste concertiste et l’éditeur du Point sur leurs vieille amitié et leurs souvenirs de l’époque où Roger-Luc Chayer dirigeait l’Orchestre des Solistes Méditerranéens de Nice en France et du premier concert symphonique du pianiste.

GGTV présente aussi un concert du pianiste au Yamaha Center de New York tourné le 21 novembre 2008 accompagné du Bulgarian Virtuosi. Un moment intense à ne pas manquer!

Deux niçois font briller la Ville de Nice en ce moment, l’un à New York et l’autre à Montréal. Il s’agit du pianiste concertiste Didier Castell-Jacomin et du corniste-chef d’orchestre Roger-Luc Chayer.

Didier Castell-Jacomin, qui était de passage dernièrement à l’Acropolis de Nice effectue une tournée du nord-est des Etats-Unis dans une série de huit concerts au Carnegie Hall, au Yamaha Center et à Minneapolis dans un programme absolument olympien comportant deux concerti pour piano et quatuor à cordes de Mozart et un concerto pour piano et quatuor à cordes de Joseph Haydn.

Castell-Jacomin, qui a interprété pour la première fois à Nice en 1991 le K.414 de Mozart a décidé de reprendre l’œuvre en hommage à Roger-Luc Chayer qui a été son premier chef d’orchestre et qui a décidé en 1991, alors qu’il était à la tête de l’Orchestre des Solistes Méditerranéens de Nice, de propulser le jeune pianiste sur la scène internationale en le programmant dans le cadre de deux concerts d’amitié France-Québec. Les villes de Nice et de Montréal étant jumelles.

Roger-Luc Chayer a été récemment invité à interpréter La Marseillaise, face à l’Assemblée nationale du Québec dans le cadre des célébrations du 400ème anniversaire de la fondation de Québec en Nouvelle-France. Cette prestation solo au cor ayant été saluée par le Premier ministre du Québec Monsieur Jean Charest, par le Premier ministre de la France Monsieur François Fillon et par le Président de la France Monsieur Nicolas Sarkozy. Roger-Luc Chayer possède la double nationalité française et canadienne.

Un documentaire soulignant la réunification du maestro et du pianiste maintenant devenu concertiste, qui se reverront pour la première fois 17 ans après leur prestation à Nice en 1991, est en préparation et sera diffusé dès février 2009 sur les télévisions culturelles francophones. Ce document comportera des extraits musicaux dont un duo interprété par les deux musiciens, une Romance sans Paroles de Mendelssohn.

Didier Castell-Jacomin et Roger-Luc Chayer sont issus du Conservatoire national de Nice sous la direction de Monsieur André Peyregne et sont passés par les classes de Catherine Collard (piano), de Françoise Jacquin (piano), de Paul Warin (cor) et de Paul Jamin (musique de chambre).
