Queen Elizabeth the II gave royal assent to a bill that will give gays, lesbians, bi and trans people the right to marry in England and Wales. The bill was signed this past Wednesday, and was approved earlier this week by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords

This means that under the new law, gays will be able to join together in civil ceremonies or in church services. Prime Minister David Cameron backed the bill, which was opposed by many in his own Conservative Party. Liberal Democrats and Labour Party officials also supported the measure.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller said of the bill, after it passed both houses of Parliament: “The title of this bill might be ‘marriage,’ but its fabric is about freedom and respect. Freedom to marry regardless of sexuality or gender, but also freedom to believe that marriage should be of one man and one woman, and not be marginalised,” Reuters reported.

Prior to the law, England allowed civil partnerships for gays, but gay activists said that wasn’t good enough — that it created the image that gays were somehow inferior to heterosexuals.

While LGBT people will be able to marry in 2014 in England and Wales, the Queen is also the Head of the Commonwealth where gays and lesbians are regularly persecuted, arrested, murdered, and executed in 36 countries of the 54 member nations.

“While this is an incredible moment for England, it is time for the government of England to be more outspoken about anti-gay violence happening in the Commonwealth, said Andre Banks, Executive Director and Co-Founder of All Out. “Many of the laws that persecute gays and lesbians are a direct result of old colonial-era laws inherited from England. In places like Cameroon, Nigeria, Uganda, and 36 Commonwealth nations, gay, lesbian, bi, and trans people aren’t fighting for marriage, they are fighting for their lives.”

In Cameroon, the punishment for being gay or lesbian, or even looking gay or lesbian, can be up to 10 years. Often the accused are jailed without even facing trial.

In Uganda, gays and lesbians are continually under the threat of a bill that would punish gays and lesbians with the death penalty.

In Nigeria, not only is it a crime to be gay or lesbian, but anyone who attends a marriage ceremony between two men or two women could face up to 10 years in prison if they do not turn the couple in. Religious leaders who perform these ceremonies are also under threat of arrest.

Gay Jamaicans are threatened by a law that punishes same gender relationships. Homophobic and transphobic attacks make it incredibly difficult for any LGBT people to live in Jamaica.

In May, the Commonwealth adopted a new charter. The 54 member nations agreed, “We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds.”

Sexual orientation and gender identity were not explicitly mentioned in the new charter, but some have argued that ‘other grounds’ was a politically expedient way to include LGBT people in the new charter.

Fox News shitbag Jesse Watters went to last month’s successfully crowdfunded Coney Island Mermaid Parade for a segment on The O‘Reilly Factor that aired last night. It was really great, a true testament to the 30-year-old celebration’s campy spirit of exuberant acceptance.

Just kidding, it was awful. As to be expected from a hypocritical stalker-producer who still wears the collar up on his golf shirt, Watters managed to mock everyone he spoke with, joke about bazongas, and generally be a smug piece of garbage. His subject selection skewed queer, specifically to drag darlings and a man in a tutu because, y’know, to the Fox News audience, they are funny! Oh, the guy in a tutu is a teacher, you want him teaching your kids, nudge nudge, this is why we homeschool! Then he asked some topless mermaids if they were patriots. HAHAHA!

Best of all, Watters interrogated a cross-dresser in a sailor-girl outfit who rewarded him by dancing near the correspondent’s personal space, which the “Watters’ World” editors interspliced with a clip of Ace Ventura dry-heaving. Hilarious!

After the pre-taped segment, O’Reilly debriefed Watters on his harrowing mission:

O’REILLY: I’m not being a wiseguy or being offensive. It seems like there are a lot of gays attracted to this … What is that?

WATTERS: I think a lot of the transvestite community descends on Coney Island during this parade. I have no idea why. But they’re very flamboyant and set the tone for the rest of the parade.

Un fonds qui traverse une période difficile marquée ce mercredi par la démission de son directeur exécutif, Michel Kazatchki- ne. «Il n’y a aucun lien entre ce départ et l’argent versé par Bill Gates, qui avait prévu ce don depuis un moment déjà», affirme Simon Bland, président du conseil d’administration du fonds.
Jeudi, Bill Gates est venu annoncer le versement de 750 mil- lions de dollars au fonds (jusqu’en 2016), soit davantage que les 600 millions déjà donnés ces dix dernières années. Cet argent ne vient pas directement de sa fortune personnelle, mais de la Fondation Bill & Melinda Gates, dont la dotation totale dépasse les 36 milliards de dollars. «Nous voulons être l’un des plus grands supporters du fonds, qui prouve de plus en plus son utilité, a affirmé Bill Gates. Mais cela ne suffit pas, sachant que 9 millions de per- sonnes vivent avec cette maladie sans avoir accès au moin- dre traitement.» Parlons chiffres: le fonds prévoir d’avoir 10 milliards de dollars disponibles à débourser entre l’année dernière et 2013, soit 2 milliards de plus que les trois an- nées précédentes.
Est-ce suffisant? «Il est insupportable que nous n’ayons pas les moyens d’atteindre ces 9 millions de personnes. Mais nous avons toujours le soutien de nombreux États», assure Simon Bland.

Invité à faire une présentation aux délégués réunis à la conférence internationale sur le SIDA à Vienne en Autriche, ce matin, le Président Bill Clinton a livré un avertissement clair aux personnes qui se targuent de la cause du SIDA, qui utilisent les fonds publics pour se payer des voyages somptueux et qui ne contribuent pas assez à la cause qu’ils prétendent défendre. Est-ce que le champion des voyageurs du SIDA, Jean-Luc Romero, était visé par ce message de désapprobation?

Si on songe maintenant au fait que Jean-Luc Romero, un politicien marginal français, fait de très nombreux voyages présidentiels, qu’il ne réside jamais ailleurs que dans les meilleurs hôtels, qu’il ne mange que dans les meilleurs restos et qu’il commet ces dépenses toujours au nom du SIDA sans jamais redonner ce qu’il coute à la cause, car il est certain que M. Romero, qui voyage de par le monde pour représenter selon lui les personnes atteintes, ne le ferait jamais avec son propre budget. Si on met donc en perspective les propos et l’avertissement du président américain à la retraite face aux voyages somptueux de Jean-Luc Romero, il est clair que le message lui était destiné, à lui et ses pairs dépensiers, afin qu’il se retiennent un peu plus à l’avenir et songent que l’argent qu’ils dépensent pourrait être affecté aux soins plutôt qu’à la qualité princière de ces voyages d’occasion.

Jean-Luc Romero participe à quelques organisations SIDA tout à fait bénévolement, à condition que ses frais princiers lui soient entièrement remboursés. Un bel exemple de bénévolat n’est-ce pas?
